Boone Pickens on March 6 as its 2008 Lifetime Sportsman Award winner before 900 guests in the Frontiers of Flight Museum near Dallas Love Field Airport. The auction of exclusive hunts and trip packages helped the PCQU set a new record for Quail Unlimited banquets. In one night the chapter raised $654,679; the primary beneficiary of this fundraising will be the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch.

Dining in the Dark gala to benefit Foundation Fighting Blindness

T. Boone Pickens and some friends decided they needed a little practice before participating in a unique event, Dining in the Dark, that benefits the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Since attendees will eat in pitch darkness – or at least as dark as the Fairmont Hotel's ballroom can get – and all the servers will be blind, the diners won't know what they're eating or drinking until it reaches their mouths. And they'll do it all in cocktail attire. That's why Mr. Pickens agreed to host a pre-fete meal in a storage room in his company's headquarters.

Changes are coming to the South Dallas neighborhood of Jubilee Park, but on Congo Street, many houses are still in need of paint and repairs. The billionaire oilman's donation last week will pay for a new community building. It will build a resource center with space for police and other government services. It will provide cash to buy and clear dilapidated property. It is the latest, and perhaps most uplifting, move for a long-troubled area of South Dallas – one showing signs of reversing a deadening spiral of drugs, violence, crime and blight.
