Dallas celebrated the 100th birthday of one if its grandest,
residential real estate icon Ebby Halliday with a gala benefiting
Texas university scholarships for at-risk youth March 9 at the Morton
H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Mario Frangoulis, who was named
International Ambassador of the Horatio Alger Association in December
2008 because of his love for mentoring and his ability to relate to
teens, performed with soprano Andriana Chuchman and the Dallas
Symphony Orchestra and conductor Albert-George Schram at the 100th
Birthday Concert in Honor of Ebby Halliday.
"Honoring one of Dallas' true legends on her 100th birthday is very special," says Pickens, an Alger Association board member and co-chair of the event steering committee whose Foundation has donated $914,700 to the Horatio Alger Association. "To do so and raise such a significant amount of money for Texas scholarships makes the evening all the more incredible, and befitting of Ebby's big heart and
spirit."
The woman known about Dallas as simply "Ebby" founded Ebby Halliday, REALTORS® in 1945, and has grown it into the largest independently owned residential real estate firm in Texas, and one of the largest in the country. At 100, her commitment to service and her community remains constant. She has received every honor her fellow REALTORS® can bestow as well as many of the most prestigious business and philanthropic awards including the 2005 Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans – a crowning moment for a woman who has spent her life focused on providing preeminent service in all endeavors and giving back to the community.
"I am breathless at what we have heard here tonight," Ebby said during the event. "Hard to outdo Dallas, but I think the talent Horatio Alger has brought to us tonight is absolutely outstanding. To all of my family, I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you. To all of the talent it has taken to put this together, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you!"
The Horatio Alger Association will administer the Texas scholarships in honor of Horatio Alger member Halliday. The Association celebrates the "Horatio Alger heroes" of today, and has helped nurture the development of those in the future by providing more than $70 million in college scholarship money since 1984.
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1947 to combat a growing attitude among young people that economic opportunity was a thing of the past. The Association strives to motivate and educate our nation's young people about the economic and personal opportunities afforded them through the American free enterprise system.
